About Grand Council

What is Grand Council?

Occurring every other summer in years opposite Grand Chapter, Grand Council is the umbrella term for the meeting of the Sigma Chi body that is also known as the Grand Council. This group exercises general direction and advisory powers over the Fraternity during the recess, but subject to the enactments of the Grand Chapter, and has the authority to amend only the Fraternity's statutes and Executive Committee Regulations. It is composed of the Executive Committee, past Grand Consuls, Grand Tribune, Grand Historian, Grand Trustees, Grand Praetors, one undergraduate delegate appointed by each Grand Praetor and members of the Education and Leadership Board. Undergraduate delegates attending Grand Council elect two of their own members to serve one-year terms as representatives on the Executive Committee.

Who should attend Grand Council?

Executive Committee members, past Grand Consuls, the Grand Tribune, the Grand Historian, Grand Trustees, Grand Praetors, one undergraduate delegate appointed by each Grand Praetor and members of the Education and Leadership Board are expected to attend all business sessions of the Grand Council.

All 2018 Order of Constantine inductees and their guests are welcome to attend the Order of Constantine reception.

All 2018 Significant Sig Award recipients and their guests are welcome to attend the Significant Sig Award banquet.

When will the 2018 Grand Council meeting be held?

June 22 to 23, 2018.

The 2018 Grand Council meeting will begin at 5 p.m. CT on June 22 and will conclude at 4 p.m. CT on  June 23.

The Order of Constantine reception will take place from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. CT on June 22.

The Significant Sig Award banquet will take place from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. CT on June 23.

Grand Council members can choose to depart on June 24, but must attend the Significant Sig Award banquet on June 23 in its entirety to receive a complimentary hotel room on Saturday night.

Where will the 2018 Grand Council meeting be held?

The 2018 Grand Council meeting will be held at the Renaissance Chicago O’Hare Suites Hotel, located at 8500 West Bryn Mawr Ave., Chicago, IL 60631. This hotel is easily accessed by car, taxi or ride-share via I-90 or public transit via the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Blue Line. It is located approximately four miles east of Chicago O'Hare International Airport and 15 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. The hotel features a pool, workout facilities, a full-service restaurant and plentiful meeting space.

Grand Council members
Your hotel room reservation will be made by the Fraternity after you register; there is no need to reserve your own room and reservations made on your own will not be reimbursed. Please see the covered costs and expense reimbursement guidelines for more details.

Award recipients and guests
Significant Sig Award recipients, Order of Constantine inductees and their guests are responsible for their own reservations. A special negotiated rate of $115 plus tax, per-night, is available provided the room is booked by May 18, 2018. Maximum occupancy for each room is four persons. How do I get to the 2018 Grand Council meeting?

Grand Council members
Flights must be booked through Blue and Gold Travel's Concur reservation tool. Flight or other travel reservations made on your own will not be reimbursed. Please see the covered costs and expense reimbursement guidlines for more details.

Award recipients and guests
Award recipients and guests are encouraged to fly into Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD), which is located just four miles west of the Renaissance Chicago O'Hare Suites Hotel. The hotel provides a complimentary shuttle service to and from the airport, but it is also easily accessible by car, taxi, ride-share or public transit via the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Blue Line.

Alternatively, Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW), in Chicago is less than 25 miles from the Renaissance Chicago O'Hare Suites Hotel and is easily accessed by car, taxi, ride-share or public transit via the CTA Orange Line .

For those driving to the 2018 Grand Council, the Renaissance Chicago O'Hare Suites Hotel is located just off of the S Cumberland Ave exit (79A or 79B) on I-90 in Chicago. Parking is available at $10 for same-day, daytime parking or $15 per day for overnight parking.

Order of Constantine inductees, Significant Sig Award recipients and their guests are responsible for their own travel expenses.

How much does it cost?

Grand Council members
The 2018 Grand Council meeting is free to attend for members of the Grand Council, provided all requirements listed in the covered costs and expense reimbursement guidlines are met.

Award recipients
Order of Constantine inductees receive one complimentary ticket for the Order of Constantine reception on June 22. In addition, one invited guest per inductee can also receive a complimentary ticket for the reception. Please provide the contact information for your guest during registration. Headquarters staff will then register your guest and send him or her an email confirmation. All inductees and guests are responsible for their travel expenses and hotel accommodations.

Significant Sig Award recipients receive one complimentary ticket for the Significant Sig Award banquet on June 23. Guest tickets to this event can be purchased ala carte through the Grand Council event registration page. All recipients and guests are responsible for their travel expenses and hotel accommodations.

Order of Constantine reception tickets are $35 each.

What should I wear?

Business sessions, meetings and daily meals
Business casual attire is suggested for all business sessions, meetings and daily meals.

Order of Constantine reception
A suit and tie is suggested for men, and a cocktail dress is suggested for women as appropriate attire for the Order of Constantine reception.

Significant Sig Award banquet
A suit and tie is suggested for men, and a cocktail dress is suggested for women as appropriate attire for the Significant Sig Award banquet.

What is the Order of Constantine?

Each year, the Order of Constantine recognizes a group of Sigma Chi brothers for their commitment, dedication and service to the Fraternity. Induction into the Order of Constantine is considered to be the highest honor that the Sigma Chi Fraternity bestows upon one of its members. The honor of being named an Order of Constantine Sig has been conferred on just over 760 brothers since the Order's inception at the 47th Grand Chapter in 1948.

This year's reception will honor 2018 Order of Constantine inductees and will take place from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. CT on June 22.

This is a ticketed event. This year's Order of Constantine inductees are entitled to one complimentary reception ticket, and may also bring one guest free of charge. What is the Significant Sig Award?

The Sigma Chi International Fraternity has recognized more than 1,900 brothers with the Significant Sig Award since its inception at the 1935 Grand Chapter. Significant Sig Award recipients are members whose professional accomplishments bring favor and distinction to the Fraternity; a new class is selected each year by a selection committee comprised of past Significant Sig Award winners.

This year's banquet will honor 2018 Significant Sig Award recipients and will take place from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. CT on June 23.
